What is facial nerve palsy (Bell’s palsy)?

Facial nerve palsy is a sudden weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face, caused by inflammation or pressure on the facial (seventh cranial) nerve that controls smiling, eye closure and forehead movement. Its most common form is Bell’s palsy — and the good news is that most people improve significantly with early treatment and consistent rehabilitation.

Answers to your top questions

What is the Raq app?

Raq is the first app in Asia and Africa dedicated to rehabilitation of facial palsy and facial nerve paralysis, including Bell’s palsy. It offers a structured daily exercise plan with video and voice guidance, and uses AI through your camera to guide you during exercises in real time.

Does Raq replace my doctor or physiotherapist?

No. Raq supports your treatment plan — it does not replace it. Facial palsy must first be diagnosed by a doctor to rule out serious causes such as stroke. Raq then helps you organize and follow your exercises every day.

When should I start facial palsy exercises?

Gentle, light exercises can usually begin after diagnosis and with your doctor’s approval. Early on, movements should be soft and limited, then progress as movement returns. Avoid forceful or exaggerated movements, which may encourage unwanted movements later.

How does AI help me in Raq?

While you exercise, your phone camera turns on and AI follows your movement in real time, guiding you to perform each exercise correctly — so every session is guided and precise instead of guesswork.

Is the app only for Bell’s palsy?

Raq is designed for rehabilitation of facial weakness caused by peripheral facial (seventh) nerve injury, most commonly Bell’s palsy. If your palsy has another cause — such as after surgery or Ramsay Hunt syndrome — ask your doctor what suits your case.

Which devices does Raq support?

Raq is available now on Android via Google Play. The iPhone version on the App Store is coming soon.

Which languages is Raq available in?

Raq is available in 6 languages: Arabic, English, Spanish, French, German and Turkish — including the interface and exercise explanations.
